Features

Everything it does, and nothing else.

EasyUnZip extracts archives. That constraint is the feature - what follows is the whole list, and there is no edition with more in it.

It opens where you already are

A global hotkey

Select archives in File Explorer, press AltE, and the panel opens already knowing what you selected. No window to find, no right-click menu to hunt through, nothing to drag. The hotkey is configurable if that combination is already taken on your PC.

It lives in the tray

EasyUnZip has no main window. It sits in the notification area doing nothing until you press the hotkey, and the panel closes itself when the job is done. It can start with Windows, and it is a checkbox rather than a decision made for you at install time.

One archive or twenty

The panel adapts to the selection. One archive gets a single destination; twenty get a routing choice, and the panel says how many it found rather than making you count. Thebatch extraction guideshows each routing choice.

You decide where files land

Three destinations, per job

Extract beside the archive, into a subfolder named after it, or into any folder you pick. With several archives selected you can send them all to one place, give each its own subfolder, or set a path per archive.

Take only what you came for

EasyUnZip reads the archive first and shows what is inside by file type, with a count for each. Tick .jpg and you get the photographs and none of the four hundred other files. This is a filter on extraction, not a search after it - the files you did not ask for are never written to disk. See thefile-type filter steps.

Collisions, decided once

When a file already exists you choose the policy for the whole job - overwrite, skip, or keep both - instead of answering the same dialog forty times.

It handles the awkward archives

Passwords, asked once

An encrypted archive asks for its password once. It is held in memory for the session and never written to disk, never stored in the registry and never sent anywhere. Close the app and it is gone.

Paths Windows would refuse

Archives made on Linux or macOS routinely carry names Windows will not accept, and folder structures deeper than the old 260-character limit. EasyUnZip repairs the names and uses the extended path form so the extraction completes, without you turning anything on or knowing the limit exists.

Files something else is holding open

A file locked by another program is retried rather than failing the whole job. Most locks are transient - a preview window, an indexer - and waiting a moment is the right answer.

It only reports real failures

A successful extraction shows a quiet toast and gets out of the way. A report appears when something is genuinely unrecoverable, and it names the file and the reason rather than showing a code.

What it deliberately does not have

  • No archive creation or compression. It extracts, full stop.
  • No archive browser to double-click around in.
  • No right-click entry in File Explorer in v1. The hotkey is the way in.
  • No cloud, no sync, no account.
  • No advertising, no bundled extras, no upsell to a Pro edition.

The format matrix states the same thing in a table, including what happens when you select a .7z.
