ZIP and RAR. That is the list.

Two formats, extracted properly, rather than thirty listed on a box. Everything below is what the shipped build does - the no column included.

The shipped build on Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. The "Create" column is no all the way down on purpose: EasyUnZip extracts and does nothing else.

Why only two

ZIP and RAR are what actually arrives: the ZIP a colleague sent, the RAR a camera club posted. Supporting a long tail of formats would mean a file-type list in the settings, a "which of these did you mean" dialog, and a product that is a format manager rather than a way to get files out of an archive.

Select a .7z alongside two .zip files and EasyUnZip takes the two it handles and leaves the .7z where it is. It never claims to have extracted something it did not.

What EasyUnZip handles inside those two

  • Encrypted entries. It asks for the password once, holds it in memory for the session, and never writes it to disk.
  • Long paths. Archives whose contents would break the old 260-character Windows limit are extracted anyway, without you turning anything on.
  • Names Windows will not accept. Characters that are legal on Linux and illegal on Windows are repaired rather than aborting the extraction.
  • Files in use. A file held open by another program is retried instead of failing the whole job.
  • Name collisions. You choose once, per job: overwrite, skip, or keep both.
  • Extension filtering. Extract only the .jpg files out of an archive containing four hundred of everything. Theselected file-type guideshows the exact workflow and its limits.

What it will not do

  • Create or compress. There is no "add to archive". Keep whatever you already use for making them.
  • Browse an archive. It lists what is inside so you can filter; it is not a window you double-click around in.
  • Repair damage. If the archive is corrupt, EasyUnZip says so and stops rather than producing files it cannot vouch for.
  • Convert between formats. Extracting a RAR gives you the files, not a ZIP of them.
  • Split archives. EasyUnZip acts on files ending .zip and .rar, so a set whose first part is named .zip.001 or .part1.rar is not something we have tested and not something this page claims. Use the tool that made it.

Decompression is done by the official 7-Zip engine, shipped with the app. That is why RAR support is real rather than approximate, and why there is no plugin to hunt down after installing. RAR extraction only: the unRAR licence forbids using its code to create RAR archives, and we do not.
