How to choose where extracted files go
Archives are the main way a Downloads folder becomes unusable. The fix is deciding the destination before extracting rather than tidying up after.
Decide before you extract, not after
The mess happens when an archive is extracted where it sits. Anything that opens with a destination question - rather than extracting first and asking later - removes the problem entirely.
Extract into a subfolder named after the archive
This is the safe default for any archive you did not make. Q3-brand-assets.zip becomes a Q3-brand-assets folder, and whatever was loose inside it stays contained. EasyUnZip offers it as one choice on the panel; File Explorer's Extract All proposes it too, in the path it fills in for you.
Send it somewhere else entirely
Choose a folder and the files go there instead - straight into the project folder, the photo library, the working directory. In EasyUnZip that is the Choose a folder option on the same panel, and it remembers nothing you did not ask it to.
Route several archives at once
Select twenty archives and press Alt+E. EasyUnZip can send them all to one folder, give each its own subfolder, or take a different path per archive - decided once, for the whole job, rather than answering the same question twenty times.
Decide what happens to files that already exist
Overwrite, skip, or keep both. Choosing once per job is the difference between a decision and forty dialogs, and keep both is what you want when you are not sure which copy is newer.
Why loose files happen
Whoever made the archive decided whether it contains a folder or a pile. Some archives hold one tidy folder; plenty hold forty files at the top level. Extract the second kind where it sits and those forty files join everything else already there, with nothing marking which arrived together.
Extracting into a subfolder named after the archive makes both kinds behave the same way, which is why it is worth doing even when you think the archive is tidy.
Taking only part of an archive
Sometimes the destination is not the problem - the contents are. EasyUnZip reads the archive first and lists the file types inside it with a count for each, so you can take the .jpg files out of an archive holding four hundred RAW files beside them. The rest are never written to disk at all, which is faster than extracting everything and deleting.
A note on very long paths
Extracting a deeply nested archive into an already deep folder can produce paths past the limit Windows historically enforced, and the extraction fails part-way with a name nobody can read. EasyUnZip handles this without being asked - it uses the extended path form and repairs names Windows will not accept. If you are using something else and hit it, extracting nearer the root of the drive is the usual workaround.
